The hens with your rental package will be either Golden Comet or Black Star hens (or maybe one of each). Both are hybrid breeds that are egg-cellent layers of large brown eggs. We’ve done the hard part of raising them until they are ready to start laying eggs and now you get to benefit by collecting the fresh eggs every day. Check out the breed profiles below.

Golden Comet Breed Profile

Golden comets are know for high egg-production. Golden comets are a modern day egg-laying chicken. They are a cross between The White Plymouth Rock hen and Rhode Island Red rooster. Like leghorns, golden comets are know to lay at a very early age, some begin as early as 16 weeks.

Pullets feather out black with some red in neck feathers. Males feather out with the Barred Rock pattern along with a few red feathers. Black Sex-Links are often referred to as Rock Reds or Black Stars. They are planned crosses, which are hardier and more productive than their parents’ respective breeds. The Sex Link Hybrid is the result of crossing two purebred standard breeds. This hybrid makes for very vigorous chicks, rugged brown egg laying hens and good cockerel fryers.
